The city’s rules for the curb, from the solid waste FAQ and City Code Chapter 78:

  • Carts out by 7 a.m. on your service day. You may set them out after 6 p.m. the night before.
  • Place carts at the curb next to your driveway, no more than 5 feet from the curb line or 10 feet from the edge of the pavement. Never block the sidewalk or a storm drain.
  • Bring carts back in by 8 p.m. on the day of service.
  • A cart holds no more than 80 pounds. Extra garbage can go out in up to two closed 30-gallon bags beside the cart on the morning of service.
  • Garbage set out late, or on a day that is not yours, may be picked up as a special collection with the charge added to your utility bill.

Carts and recycling bins belong to the city and stay with the property when you move.

Holiday schedule

There is no curbside pickup of garbage, yard trash or recycling on New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day, according to the city’s holiday trash collection schedule. The city says that when your day falls on one of those holidays, collection is typically the following day.

Pickup runs as normal on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples’ Day and Veterans Day.

Holiday Date Pickup that day
Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples’ Day Monday, Oct. 12 Normal schedule
Veterans Day Wednesday, Nov. 11 Normal schedule
Thanksgiving Thursday, Nov. 26 None; typically the next day
Christmas Friday, Dec. 25 None; typically the next day
New Year’s Day Friday, Jan. 1, 2027 None; typically the next day

Check with Solid Waste at 386-671-8670 the week of the holiday before you roll the cart out.

Bulk items and appliances

Furniture, appliances and other bulky items are part of household garbage service. Call 386-671-8670 to request a pickup. The city’s FAQ sets these rules:

  • Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioning units must be ordered separately, with the doors removed.
  • Mirrors must be covered in cardboard and taped.
  • Carpet must be cut, rolled and taped in sections no larger than 4 by 8 feet and no heavier than 40 pounds.
  • Up to eight car tires a year. Truck and tractor tires are not taken; they go to the Tomoka Landfill, 1990 Tomoka Farms Road, Port Orange.
  • Debris from a small project you do yourself can go out in bags or boxes of 40 pounds or less. Contractors must haul away their own debris.

Move-out, cleanout and eviction piles are not regular service. The city charges for them, and the fee can be billed to the property owner’s water utility account.

Yard waste

Yard waste is picked up every Wednesday. Put it at the curb in front of your own property, never on a vacant lot next door, and keep it separate from garbage: it goes to Volusia County’s mulching facility, and mixed piles can be charged extra.

  • Bag grass, leaves, hedge trimmings and weeds. Up to 15 bags.
  • Limbs and palm fronds can be stacked in neat piles. Limbs no longer than 5 feet and no thicker than 6 inches.
  • Piles are limited to 3 cubic yards. Larger or badly prepared piles may be tagged for a claw truck or charged.
  • Trees that were cut down or blew down are land-clearing debris, not yard waste. Order a special collection, which carries a charge.

Recycling

Recycling is single stream: everything goes in one bin. The city takes newspaper (plastic sleeves removed), office paper, cardboard, junk mail, magazines and paper bags; aluminum and steel cans; clear, green and amber glass bottles; and plastic bottles marked 1 to 5. Call 386-671-8670 to apply for a second bin.

Hazardous waste

Paint, pool chemicals, pesticides, car batteries, automotive fluids, fluorescent bulbs and similar items do not go in your cart. Take them to the Volusia County household hazardous waste facility at the Tomoka Landfill, 1990 Tomoka Farms Road, Port Orange (county Solid Waste, 386-257-6021). The city also holds a Hazardous Waste Amnesty Day each November at Public Works, 950 Bellevue Ave.; the date is announced on the utility bill.

Used motor oil goes to the county’s oil recycling igloos. Needles and test strips in red sharps containers can be dropped off free at the Florida Department of Health office at 1845 Holsonback Drive (386-274-0694).

Back door service

Residents who cannot get a cart to the curb because of a disability can apply for back door service with the city’s application (PDF), signed by a physician.
