On the beach
Breakers Oceanfront Park opened in 2008 beside the Daytona Beach Pier. The 2.5-acre park is one of only three city parks with its own beach access, and it has handicapped beach and pier access, off-beach parking, a multipurpose field, a splash fountain and a sand volleyball court. The Breakers Environmental Learning Center is open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays. Restrooms and the splash pad keep shorter hours than the park.
On the river
Halifax Harbor Park & Marina is a 60-acre marina within walking distance of downtown, with a free public boat ramp, fuel, transient slips, a fishing pier and walking paths. The marina itself is open 24 hours.
Bethune Point Park, next to the marina, opened in 2009 on five acres along the river. Its skate park, the city’s first, uses precast concrete pieces including a giant clam shell. The city has installed new playground equipment for ages 5 to 12. The Halifax Sailing Center is just south of the pavilions.
City Island Park sits north of the Silver Beach Bridge on the west side of the river, beside Jackie Robinson Ballpark and the Daytona Beach Regional Library.
Trails
The Sweetheart Trail is a traffic-free path along the Halifax River downtown and Daytona Beach’s section of the East Coast Greenway, the 2,900-mile trail from Calais, Maine, to Key West. It enters the city at Sickler Park under the Seabreeze Bridge, follows Beach Street and continues south toward Beville Road. It is named for the Sweetheart, a 75-foot yacht built on City Island in 1898 for Charles and Mary Burgoyne.
Along Beach Street, the Riverfront Esplanade has more than a mile of waterfront trail, a dog park with an agility course and a splash pad, according to the Riverfront Shops of Daytona Beach.
Tuscawilla Park and Derbyshire Sports Complex both have fitness or walking trails.
Pools
The city runs two aquatic centers:
- Campbell Aquatic Center, 400 S. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.: open swim noon to 6 p.m. Saturdays this season; $1 admission; bring a photo ID.
- Cypress Aquatic Center, opened in 2008: open swim 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, closed Sunday.
Children 12 and younger must have a parent or supervisor at least 18 in the water with them, and swimmers under 16 take a swim test.
